Gorillaz @ Glastonbury – Set List Review

Hey!
Gorillaz played with a largeband, an orchestra and many special guests! Here i review all of it, including the guest included:

‘Orchestra Intro’ – Seemed a bit unusual for Glastonbury, but it sounded good
‘Welcome To The World Of The Plastic Beach’ – Snoop Dogg was on a screen with pre-recorded parts (even though he was there earlier in the day!). That might’ve taken the live music spark off it i think
‘Last Living Souls’ – Weird Choice. He only tends to say one thing really. Cool tune though
‘O Green World’ – Like it.
‘Kids With Guns’ – His voice isnt too good (Damon Albarn), but it seems to fit with the songs they make.
‘Stylo’ – Mos Def couldnt make it, so he was replaced by someone who’s name i didnt catch. Bobby Womack sang good though
‘On Melancholy Hill’ – I really like this song and live it is pretty sweet.
‘Rhinestone Eyes’ – I like the song, but live it isnt as good
‘Broken’ – Broken is o-k.
‘Empire Ants’ – Featured Little Dragon, who has a good voice
‘Dirty Harry’ – I like the tune, but where has the rapper gone?
‘White Flag’ – Featured the Syrian National Orchestra and Kano & Bashy. I like it
‘Superfast Jellyfish’ – One of the best of the night, especially with the guest performance from De La Soul and Gruff Rhys Jones’s voice
‘Dare’ – Shaun Ryder and a lady who i dont know. She wasnt so good at singing
‘Glitter Freeze’ – Mark E Smith read the lyrics off a printout
‘Some Kind Of Nature’ – Lou Reed opened with a guitar solo, then the song
‘El Mañana’ – nice performance
‘Cloud Of Unknowing’ – Bobby Womack’s moving performance!
‘Pirate Jet’ – Extended the song to get the crowd FINALLY to sing along!
‘To Binge’ – Little Dragon returned.
‘Fire Coming Out of Monkey’s Head’ – A Tribute to Dennis Hopper with scenes from his movie.
‘Feel Good Inc’ – A great rap from De La Soul once again
‘Clint Eastwood’ – SNOOP DOGG APPEARED! Loved it!

so overall, good set, but what did NME.com think?

Gorillaz were joined by a series of guests, including Lou ReedSnoop Dogg and Shaun Ryder, as they headlined Glastonbury‘s Pyramid Stage tonight (June 25).

Damon Albarn’s band were replacingU2 at the Somerset bash, after their singer Bono suffered a back injury and required surgery last month, forcing the cancellation.

The collective featured The Clash‘s guitarist and bassist Mick Jones andPaul Simonon, plus a strings, brass band and Albarn himself on piano and vocals.

The group then welcomed De La SoulBobby WomackThe Fall’sMark E SmithBashy and Kano to join them onstage at various points in the show.

Playing ’Welcome To The World Of The Plastic Beach’ early in the set,Gorillaz relied on screens featuringSnoop Dogg, despite the rapper playing the same stage earlier that day.

The no show led to huge surprise among fans – however, the rapper eventually appeared during last song of the night, performing the rap on’Clint Eastwood’, dropping the words of his own hit ’Drop It Like It’s Hot’over the song in place of Del The Funky Homosapien who performed on the original.

The set also featured Bobby Womack on vocals on ’Stylo’ – although Mos Def, who had been due to join him, had to cancel his festival appearence due to a family death – and ’Cloud Of Unknowing’, whileBashy and Kano rapped on ’White Flag’.

De La Soul appeared live for’Superfast Jellyfish’ and ’Feel Good Inc’, while Happy Mondays singerRyder reprised his singing role live on 2005 UK Number One single’Dare’.

Elsewhere in the set, Mark E Smithperformed vocals on ’Glitter Freeze’ – although he needed a little help, reading his lyrics from a printout.

Reed, meanwhile, was making his debut live performance with Gorillaz, having contributed vocals to ‘Some Kind Of Nature’ on recent album’Plastic Beach’. He arrived on stage mid-set unannounced, playing a guitar solo before the song kicked in and he sang.

Albarn was headlining the festival on the Pyramid Stage for the second year in a row, having closed last year’s event as frontman of Blur . He was clearly enjoying his performance with Gorillaz, leading a huge singalong of‘Pirate Jet’ before the four-song encore ended the show and the first night of musical action at Glastonbury 2010.
